Embarking on a new sauna project is an exciting process that gives you the chance to get creative and build something that will give you many years of enjoyment. It’s also a big job with plenty to think about, from the sauna’s design and position relative to other parts of your home to how you’ll make sure it serves its purpose, especially if you want it to share space with other elements of your home spa setup.
Auroom offers a variety of both ready-made and custom sauna solutions that you can use as a starting point or take inspiration from. With such a range of options to choose between, the following tips and considerations will help you as you begin to envisage and plan out your perfect home sauna.
If you’re intending to install a sauna, placement is the first thing you’ll need to figure out. You might have a lot of options to choose between – will you integrate it into the existing building, position it alongside the house as an extension or have it as a standalone construction in the outdoor space?
Some aspects that might affect this decision are the available space, the shape and size of sauna you want and how you intend to use it – we’ve factored this consideration into our range of ready-made sauna designs, with both indoor and outdoor options available in a variety of sizes and styles, including our minimalist Essential collection for smaller indoor spaces.
You’ll also need to think about how your sauna will be connected to your water and electric supplies and how close it will be to any other facilities you want to have around it. For instance, if you have a massage room, a yoga or exercise studio, or an indoor or outdoor pool, you may want them close enough to the sauna to be able to easily move between the two without getting too cold along the way.
As well as the sauna room itself, you’re likely to want places for changing, bathing and generally hanging out before and after your session.
Picture yourself there with your family or guests – do you prefer a quick splash in the shower or a nice long soak in the hot tub? Are you the kind of person who likes to regularly get in and out of the sauna to check your sausages on the barbecue? Do you want a dedicated dry area next to the wet room where you can play board games or read a book in the sun? Will you do all these activities indoors or out, and how much space do you need for them? And what do you require to make them possible, from cookers, fridges and sinks to fans, furniture and storage?
These questions and more need to be carefully considered when planning out the space where your sauna will be.
Your sauna will be part of your home, so it needs to feel like yours.
Whether you choose to blend your spa area into the existing design scheme of your home or go for something that stands out, you need to think long and hard about materials, colors, shapes and tactile surfaces.
Perhaps you’d like a modern, minimal space with lots of glass to let light and air in, or maybe you’d prefer something more traditional. For inspiration, you could start by looking at Auroom’s pre-designed saunas, which come in two ranges; Essential saunas have a simple, easygoing style, while the saunas in our Designer collection are finely crafted from high-quality materials for the ultimate wellness experience.
Meanwhile, our tailor-made option offers the possibility to create the perfect sauna by customizing every detail.
We’ve already listed plenty of considerations, and we haven’t even talked about the actual sauna yet! This is another aspect where you’ll have plenty of options to choose from – for starters, do you want an electric heater or a wood-burning one?
Many sauna enthusiasts speak highly of the more natural sensation of sitting in a wood-fired sauna but there are also high-quality electric versions out there, and they can be much more convenient, especially if you don’t have abundant access to firewood.
Then there’s the question of whether you’ll purchase a ready-made sauna or design your own from scratch. If you choose the latter, you’ll need to think about the placement of the benches, windows, vents and heater, the materials you want to use for the various elements and what kind of lighting you’re after, whether that be colored LED strips lining the benches and walls, more traditional sauna lamps or spotlights, or your own unique lighting concept.
Thanks to evolving sauna technology, there are also many optional extras you can consider, such as remote or mobile control units, built-in speakers or different types of sauna timers – your imagination is the limit.
The finer details of your sauna space will tie everything together visually and complete your spa experience, so it’s important not to underestimate them. From accessories like buckets and ladles to benches and thermometers, consider how you’re going to use your sauna and what you’ll need in there to make it work for you.
Do you like to have a seat cover to sit on, or a pillow to lean on? Where will you store your spare towels and aroma oils, and your jugs and glasses for water? If you want everything to be just right, planning is key. So, the more you vision your sauna experience in advance, mapping out how you can facilitate the perfect enjoyment using the amount of space you have available, the better prepared you will be when you begin designing and creating the ideal spa area for you and your family.
